Made-to-Order Fairy Wings Flash Sale Tonight, Wed. 3/17 at 8pm PDT

I’ll be offering a selection of wings with pre-determined vein colors in your choice of film color - except for one set. These Pansy wings painted in the Water Lily colorway are being offered not as ready-to-ship or a true made-to-order, but as a pre-order.

Pansy wings in the Water Lily colorway (as shown above) will be a pre-order for a very slightly defective set .

The photos above are of a set of Pansy wings in the Water Lily colorway with black veins I made for a customer. Now, since I also ran into a problem with one of the Water Lily panels having a small hair trapped in the film (I blame the cat!) I replaced that panel for this order but kept the one with the hair in case there's interest in a discounted set that's a duplicate. I'd much rather offer another set at a discount than tear off all that vinyl and waste material, so I'll be listing these in tonight’s sale as a pre-order for this specific set to be made with a $39 discount due to the small stray cat hair and I’ll finish making them if they sell (they'll be $450 plus shipping).

Below are 2 photos of the panel with the trapped hair, it's more visible at some angles than others and is located just outside of that small white / clear oval near the tip of the upper panel.

All others you can choose the film color, or painting colors for painted wings, but not the vein color.

Colette 'Pix' wings, painted or single color with vinyl veins for $500

Cosette 'Pix' wings, painted or single color with vinyl veins for $589

Goblin Princess wings in a single color with black veins for $300

Datura wings in a single color with gold veins for $319

Nightshade wings in a single color with silver veins for $275
Shipping costs are additional.

Remember, the listings won’t show until the 8pm start time tonight, Wed. April 17 at 8pm Pacific Daylight Time at this link: https://fancy-fairy-wings-things.myshopify.com/collections/flash-sales

Update: The Good and the Bad

I hope you are all well and safe, fancy fairies.

I know for so many of us not just in the US but all around the world, it's been a rough couple of weeks and might get rougher.

The good news is, as far as we know at this moment, the vendors that handle the metal cutting and the powder coating for me are both in business through this pandemic lockdown as they are apparently considered 'essential businesses'!
I also  have some wing frames that I had already gotten cut and coated so it looks like I'm still in business.
Whether you all still will want to spend on wings is a question I don't know the answer to, but if you do I'll still be offering.

The bad news is my boyfriend's father passed away unexpectedly this weekend :(
He had just lost his mother not even 2 years ago yet, so this has been hard - especially on top of the panic of knowing we all will be in isolation for possibly more than 3 weeks and the dangers of catching this virus or someone else we care about getting ill.
Actually even any illness or injury no matter if it's from this or not would be bad because experts expect that the hospitals will soon fill up with COVID19 patients and any other health issues will have to be pushed aside unless it's an emergency.

To make sure everyone stays safe, we are not going to be traveling to visit any family, as our area is on lockdown anyway, and we aren't supposed to be coming into contact with anyone we don't live with unless absolutely necessary.
Not just because I'm in danger if I catch it, but because we could have it ourselves and not even know, and there aren't enough test kits yet to test even all the people with COVID symptoms.

This is on the heels of helping out my mom, who was very sick a few weeks ago with cough and fever, and who got sick AGAIN last week but thankfully the fever only lasted a day that time. When it all started she had a fever for at least a week or more, with a bad cough.
But, would Kaiser test her?
No.
Not then.
Not now either.

Thankfully I had bought myself an R95 mask last year to use during soldering projects, and since I haven't gotten around to much of that it was pretty new still! It has all the same filtering that the N95 masks do but with the addition of filtering oily particles.
It was like finding gold - it meant I could at least go in and talk to my mom for a few minutes and drop off some essentials to her without risking either transmission from me if I am a mystery carrier, and without risking catching in case she was. She also wore a mask when I saw her.
Just so you know these form to my face and have a good seal - it's harder to breathe while wearing, that's how I know it's doing its job. I don't touch the front not even when I take it off.
It goes right back into the plastic clam shell container with a paper towel over the front of it so it's not even touching the inside of the package and I haven't touched it at all since Monday evening after getting back from mom's.

*Also an FYI - the type that have the air flow valve do NOT filter the air being exhaled.
Only the air being inhaled. I am using the couple I have left for sanding, the valve helps the moisture and heat build up when I'm getting sweaty from it.
Again, since we are all supposed to change our behavior and act as if we are the carrier, since we all could be, I don't wear those out for any virus protection since it would not protect anyone else.
The R95 I do wear out for that has no valve and should protect both ways and I’m not going out around people unless really necessary.

I wear rubber gloves that I throw away right when I leave and I still wash my hands when I got home, sterilized my phone, etc.

I'm washing my hands a LOT. They are not happy about it, as I have eczema but I make sure to use a good hand moisturizing cream whenever I do and they're hanging in there.

Everything is clean when I'm working, as I've got my hands washed and tools sanitized, and by the time deliveries would reach you it would be past the 3 day mark that apparently AFAIK is the longest that the virus is lasting on a surface like plastic.
If you're concerned, you can always put it aside out of the way somewhere for an additional few days just to make sure any virus that might try to hang on is good and dead.

We aren't going out, except to walk outside and if we need groceries I go with the mask and a fresh set of gloves, trying to space out the use of that mask by a few days so that hopefully anything on it will be dead by the time I touch it next.
I've even considered trying to sterilize it with my UV light oven, but have to confirm that those lights work for this purpose. I’m not a source for medical advice, but these are the things we’ve been doing to get by since there are shortages and I have asthma.

Perhaps this will give me more time, once we are over this initial shock, to do more tutorials and make more content? I hope so.
Maybe photo shoots outside, as long as we wouldn't be fined for it as the weather will soon be nice and there should be things blooming. There's a great little wildflower area on a bike path near us that has sections to walk through, we didn't get to shoot there last year but maybe this year we'll make it happen!

All that said, I want to thank all of you for supporting my art. I appreciate each and every one of you for being here and hope to offer you all more wing goodies as soon as I have a chance. <3

Kylie Jenner & Mother Plucker Feathers: Infringement of My Victoria's Secret Wing Designs

*Update 3/20/2020
The legal dispute between Kylie Jenner and I has been resolved. For clarification, we have never done business together and there are no plans to do so in the future.

*Update 12/26/2019
This dispute has been resolved between Mother Plucker Feathers and I.

It’s Infringement Mother Plucker! They copied my wings for Kylie Jenner's Fairy Halloween Costume!

Right: Kylie Jenner wearing a knock of that same copyright registered design (photo by SPW)

Mother Plucker Feathers Co Inc. is taking credit for providing the fairy wings above (above right) to Kylie Jenner for a Halloween birthday party this last week, just after contacting me a couple weeks ago asking for my materials resources. This is an original design I drew from scratch, NOT a design from nature.

They even came to me last year, with the request to subcontract the same giant Morpho wings that I made for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2015’s Exotic Butterflies segment but in pink, sending my original product photo in the email. They were also for Kylie (I didn't know until after Halloween) but after extensive emails back & forth, apparently with requests from Jill Jacobs, Kylie’s stylist, changing the direction a few times, the whole thing fell through and Mother Plucker made a different set for her themselves without my involvement out of fabric.
I was told this celeb wanted my wings and loves my work last year when they contacted me, so they all seemed to be familiar with my designs.
I also sent them a lot of links to other designs in my web shop for examples of colors and such.
The question of access is no question at all.

Mother Plucker again came to me again a few weeks ago, asking for 3 sets of iridescent wings 'at a good price' with a tight deadline I couldn't meet.
They emailed later asking where to get the materials I use, so I directed them to my online tutorial, which ironically explicitly explains in the first 2 minutes how important it is to respect copyright (see video below) and not to use others’ existing designs. I was even promised that they would not copy my designs in their email.
That tutorial showed the creation of a very different design, wings from a real butterfly species by the way. So no, there is no implied permission granted to use any of my designs simply because I taught a technique.

Imagine my surprise when my fans and friends sent me links to Kylie Jenner’s photos in a copy of my Kira design - which I have the actual US Copyright certificate of registration for - when I had not been asked nor paid for the use of my design.
In fact, that design was worn by 2 different Victoria’s Secret Angels in their 2014 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show’s ‘Fairytale’ segment. I had 3 other pieces in that show and a handful of them in 2015 as well.
You can see all the pieces I created for them here: https://www.fancyfairy.com/gallery-2-celebrity-fancy-fairies

People were commenting on Mother Plucker’s and Kylie's posts calling them out for copying it before I even found out about Kylie wearing the knock off wings, because they are one of my oldest and known works and many of my fans recognized the design.
Both mine and the knock off have the same basic vein design as my own.

Every vein has been included in the copy, even the little squiggly downward curve at the tip of the antennae.

Images used here for the purposes of fair use, commentary and public interest.

The outer shape is a little more loosely copied, but still follow the same silhouette as mine with minor differences in the length and skinniness of the tip along the top.

The vein design is what I registered with the copyright office.

Jill Jacobs (Kylie’s stylist I mentioned earlier) seems to be credited as the stylist again, Mother Plucker the 'designers' in charge of fabrication.

It’s not yet certain which part of this team is the most liable, but that will be determined more clearly as my IP attorney reviews this case.

In addition to these wings being seen all over the world on two Angels as well as viewed on my site through the years, that design is currently the first item you'll see when you click on the Shop page of my website! See for yourself below and here: https://www.fancyfairy.com/shop
It’s hard to believe this was an accident. Someone in that team had to know they were copying an existing design, no matter who they thought it belonged to.

Although that is a digital overlay item, my terms are crystal clear in the download that it is only meant to be used in photo editing / digital art, never to be redistributed as stand alone wings whether physical or digital, and not for commercial use. Just in case anyone tries that baseless argument.

I first published this design in 2007, as you can see in this screenshot from my old, gaudy website (below left) thanks to the Wayback Machine Internet Archive. It’s also been around in Second Life™ for just as long (below, right), tho thankfully I think my aesthetic has improved since then!

I’ve frequently spoken out about copyright infringement and how much it hurts artists, when it happens to me and when it happens to others.
So much in fact, my friends have nicknamed me “the copyright fairy”.
I’ve been infringed upon by a very large photo editing app company, a child millionaire, craft supply companies, 3D asset marketplaces and more.
Infringements hurt artists, even more so when it involved someone like Kylie Jenner, one of the most visible and wealthy celebrities in the world. Millions of people will see her in my design, but not the quality I usually set my standards to, mistakenly thinking it originated from a different artist.
Please, support independent artists whenever you can. So much of what is churned out by huge companies gets built on the backs of lesser known artists who can’t fight back.
You usually get higher quality pieces, helping us continue to create our art, and you’re helping us pay the bills in a world where the gap between the rich and the low income is bigger than ever and the cost of living grows ever higher.

A lot of people have been asking how to help, one way is to subscribe to my Patreon if you wish to help out monetarily. I only charge when I release content for my Patrons there and it starts at only $1. https://www.patreon.com/faeryangela
You can also purchase my affordable digital wing overlays, clip art and cut files to use in your photos and digital artwork - NOT to make wings out of except for the Piera Clearwing Satyr file because that is a real butterfly design, I hope we’ve all learned that lesson by now to actually read the Terms of Use: https://fancy-fairy-wings-things.myshopify.com/collections/all/digital

To sum it up, I’m shocked at this violation of both my IP and my trust.
Infringement sure is a Mother Plucker isn’t it?

*Edited 11/10 to clarify that my Kira Wings design is my original design, not from nature, and to correct some minor grammar for easier reading.
